Moving into your own home is an exciting time, and many things may feel unfamiliar. The same often applies to electricity contracts. So, what should you keep in mind when arranging your first electricity contract?

You must be 18 to sign an electricity contract

Because electricity is paid for after it has been used, signing an electricity contract requires you to be of legal age. In practice, electricity is supplied before payment is made.

Why is my credit information checked?

Because electricity is used before it is paid for, we always check the credit information of new customers.

Alternatively, we may ask a new customer to provide a security deposit. In this case, the electricity contract is made conditionally. If the deposit is not paid by the due date, the contract will be dropped.

The security deposit is €200 for apartments and €500 for detached houses and other properties.

What is electricity distribution?

When you sign an electricity contract, an electricity distribution agreement is automatically created with your local distribution company.

Electricity distribution is a separate service from electricity sales, and distribution companies cannot be changed or competitively tendered.

If you live in the Vaasan Sähköverkko distribution area and sign an electricity contract with Vaasan Sähkö, your energy and distribution charges will be combined on the same invoice. Otherwise, you will receive a separate invoice from your local distribution company.

Sign your electricity contract before you move

If you are moving to a new home, remember to get your electricity contract well in advance – preferably about a week before moving day.

This ensures that electricity is available in your new home from day one.

If you forget to make a contract and find yourself standing in a dark apartment, it’s still possible to have the electricity connected on the same day.

Please note that connections can only be completed during our opening hours, so it’s especially important to get your electricity contract well ahead of weekends.

A same-day connection fee will be charged according to the price list of the local distribution company.

What if I am under 18 and moving into my own home?

An electricity contract for a minor must always be signed by an adult, such as a parent or guardian.

However, anyone can pay the electricity bill, including the minor living in the property.

Which electricity contract is best for a first home?

For customers moving into their first home, we usually recommend Student Electricity. It is particularly suitable for apartment living and moderate electricity consumption.
